Coffee - There Are the Myths and Then There is the Truth
Coffee is so popular and loved that many have romanticized its origin and its abilities a bit. From years ago until today the myths about coffee have been numerous.
There are many stories about when coffee was first discovered. Reliable sources say that it was discovered in Ethiopia sometime in 500 B.C.E. The properties of this amazing bean were quickly appreciated and it was moved to Arabia. There is where it received its name.
The worldwide distribution of coffee began during the Renaissance period.
Coffee quickly grew in popularity and Europeans and Asians jumped on the band wagon. North and South America and the Middle East were not far behind. Coffee quickly became a worldwide beverage.
The love of coffee inspired many stories about its abilities. There were claims of cures that coffee could perform that spread the world over. Of course most of these are just tall tales but coffee does have some proven health benefits.
Harvard researchers have discovered after a 20 year study of over 100,000 people that drinking coffee in moderation can reduce the risk of diabetes, cirrhosis of the liver and asthma symptoms.
The benefits and risks of antioxidants and caffeine in coffee have also been discussed. Most are aware of the affects of caffeine on your sleep and some say it causes nervousness. Some are not aware that caffeine is an insecticide. Antioxidants have been discovered to be good for the heart and they are found in coffee. Coffee is also a dieretic.
Coffee is second only to oil as a commodity. The benefits and risks can be discussed until the end of time. This drink will be around forever.
Coffee sales reach approximately $9 billion per year and its popularity continues to grow. People partake of over 400 billion cups of coffee every year. This is amazing considering that only about 15% of people worldwide drink coffee on a daily basis.
Of course with the rise of coffee sales is the rise of equipment to make a better, richer cup. The sales of coffee makes, roasters, bean grinders, etc., make the coffee industry a booming one.
Starbucks is a perfect example of the lucrative business of coffee, having over 10,000 stores worldwide. The coffee business, in whatever form, is a good business to be in and it doesn't look like that will change in the near future.
