Prawns Are a Meal-Time Favorite!

By:  Allie Moxley

With their firm texture and sweet taste, prawns and recipes for prawns are sure to delight your guests, no matter who they are. Cleaned and de-veined, prawns can be served on their own, or with simple garnishing, such as mango chutney or a garlic aioli. Skewered and grilled prawns are a crowd favorite and a perfect way to start a dinner party.

Though prawns can easily added to most any meal, recipes for prawns specifically abound on the Internet and in seafood recipe books. Though noodle dishes abound for prawns (like the Pad Thai Recipes to follow) there are also lots of noodle-less options as well.

If a flavorful Pad Thai is in your cards tonight, try it with prawns, if you haven't before. Simply heat peanut oil in a wok and stir-fry prawns and tofu. Stir in 2 lightly beaten eggs and then the rest of the ingredients: Chinese chives (kuchai), bean sprouts, cellophane noodles, finely chopped red Thai peppers, fish sauce, a pinch of sugar, 2 tablespoons of ground peanuts, lime juice, and paprika. Stir-fry for 2 minutes. Add a curry sauce if you wish, or just serve as is.

Other recipes for prawns are less daring, like stir-fried Kale with Garlic and Baby Prawns. Clean and destem a bunch of kale and cook in 2 tablespoons of olive oil, until bright green. Stir in 5 cloves of crushed garlic and a handful of poached baby prawns just before removing from heat. Then stir in ยบ cups Parmesan and a big pinch of crushed red pepper flakes.

Want something more fresh? What about a prawn and avocado bagel? Top a cream-cheese covered bagel half with prawns, lettuce, and slices of avocado. To taste, sprinkle on black pepper and lemon juice. Eat as an open-face sandwich.

Need something hot and simple for a dinner party appetizer? How about grilled prawns with a peanut dipping sauce? Marinade prawns in olive oil, onions and garlic, for 2 hours before grilling. Grill for no more than five minutes, turning once. Be careful, Prawns can cook very quickly. Serve with a peanut dipping sauce made with peanut butter, lemon juice, black pepper and salt.
