Delicious Shellfish in Asian Style Meals

By:  Allie Moxley

Fresh from the freezing waters of Alaska, prawn seafood is a simple but decadent addition to any meal.?By itself it makes an enticing appetizer, with a slight but satisfying crunch.?More often it is used as one of many ingredients in a larger dish.?It provides the finishing gourmet touch to kabobs, salads, and stir fries.?A particularly excellent way to cook up prawn seafood is in Asian style dishes.?The variety of sauces and spices in Asian cooking beautifully match the rich flavor of seafood.?Get creative with some Asian cooking, and try adding shellfish to an old favorite recipe or to a brand new experiment.

Before suggesting some possible dishes, it is worth making a brief note of definition here: the word prawn is more or less interchangeable with the word shrimp, though in the United States it tends to indicate larger shrimp.?The term "prawn seafood" therefore doesn't mean just one species, but describes this general category of delicious shellfish.?Prawns are the most popular and widely-consumed shellfish, and those caught wild in the fresh waters of Alaska are especially rich in flavor and nutritional content, with a mouth-watering texture and consistent high quality.?What's more, Alaskan shellfish are caught with sustainable practices, so you can have peace of mind knowing there will be more to come for the foreseeable future.

As an Asian appetizer, prepare prawns with lime, ginger, and a little teriyaki sauce.?The ideal way to cook them is skewered on kabobs over a grill, though pan frying also works well.?Serve them with a sweet and sour dip and a dish of sesame seeds.?Pull a prawn off the skewer, dip it in the sauce then dip it in the sesame seeds, and you have a mouth-watering Asian-inspired appetizer.?As a main course, whip a stir fry with fresh vegetables from a local market.?Green beans, sprouts, onions and peppers make a great combination.?If you use frozen prawn seafood, you just need to add them to the pan with enough time to get hot all the way through.?Serve with Asian noodles or jasmine rice, and you have a winning dinner!
