A Simple and Tasty Tzatziki Recipe

By:  Kirk Somers

There is nothing better than Greek food. Its healthy and delicious; its always a treat. And its good for the soul! And one of the foundations of Greek food is the Tzatziki sauce: fresh, creamy. Heres a simple tzatziki recipe:

Recipe ingredients for Tzatziki sauce

16 ounces (2 cups) of thick Greek yogurt
4 to 10 cloves of garlic, finely chopped
1/2 cup of diced or grated cucumber
1 tablespoon of olive oil
2 teaspoons of lemon juice

Preparation

Prepare all your ingredients before you start. First mix oil and lemon juice in a medium sized bowl. Add yoghurt, folding it in slowly, so it mixes thoroughly with the oil and juice. Most plain yoghurt will work fine, but if you can get Greek yoghurt, even better! Next, add the garlic (tip - try roasted garlic!) , according to taste, and then the cucumber. Stir the mixture until evenly distributed. Garnish with a bit of green and serve well chilled.

Yield: This recipe will make about 2.5 cups.

Add mint or dill: Slight variations include 1-2 tablespoons of finely chopped fresh dill and/or fresh mint.

I prefer dill for this tzatziki recipe and so do the Greeks!

Storage:

Your tzatziki will easily store safely and easily in your refrigerator for several days. However, the garlic may become stronger after a while in the fridge.

Serving Suggestions:

Tzatziki sauce is great for dipping pita bread before a meal. It can also be used for sandwiches or for gyros. Everybody enjoys a good tzatziki sauce and it will be a welcome addition to any dinner table. Enjoy!
